Last Waltz Revisited 2010 Boulder Theater 11/19/10

Another year comes around and marks the second annual Last Waltz Revisited show at the Boulder Theater. Headed by CR Groover and Tori Pater from Polytoxic, the event hosts over 50 local musicians, and a musical commradere not often seen. The group of talented locals hammered threw the legendary music of The Band to a mixed crowd ranging from teens to baby boomers, all singing along. Nothing gets me in the Thanksgiving spirit like the Last Waltz...

Octopus Nebula Halloween 10/30/10 with Random Rab, Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad, Dubskin and more

What started as a night headed to a Halloween show in Denver for portraits and show photos. with a band that is relatively new on my radar, Octopus Nebula, Turned into a great night to be down at Cervantes. With over seven hours of musical mayhem, the evening started off with Eminence Ensemble, then featured Sleepyhead, Blockhead, Octopus Nebula, and Random Rab, with Auditory Elements filling in all the gaps and keepin the vibe movin between sets.
The cool thing about hitting shows at Cervantes, is, the Other Side, there is always shows going on there too, so if the 6 bands wasn't enough, you could hop next door and catch the rasta train with Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad, and Dubskin. Oh what a night!

Time-Lapse Trial from Tobin Voggesser on Vimeo.

I am not by any means good at drawing, but I was having fun making little time-lapse mountain scenes.

The Kinetix Live at the Aggie Theatre 10/02/10
Kinetix rages through Fort Collins and the Aggie Theatre as part of their "Sorry for Partying" Tour with the Brew and Roster McCabe. I got to the show a little late do to another shoot that day and am totally bummed to miss Roster, make sure to check them out! The tour was a great mix of musical talent, and worth every penny to the fans who saw it.

Concert Time-lapse test MST

Here are a few test runs at doing a time-lapse video compiled of still images...

This video is made from 200 still photos taken with a Nikon D300

Mountain Standard Time played the Boulder Theater with Michael Kang sitting in and Yamn was the opener. 10/21/10

Yet another big step one of the new local powerhouses Mountain Standard Time. Their first Headlining show at the Boulder Theater proved that the band is ready to fill the larger rooms with their own take on Colorado Bluegrass. Michael Kang, from the String Cheese Incident, joined the band for most of the first set on the Fiddle, and made sure everyone was on their feet.

Powellapalooza 2010

What makes a festival better than a million acre lake? Houseboats, jet skis, speed boats, wakeboard competition, two stages on the Marina, two houseboat stages...
Lake Powell and Page Arizona provide the perfect setting for a music festival with serious potential!
Powellapalooza 2010 got off to a slow start, but when things were rolling it was a good old time, and we all could see how big this festival could become.
Here are some of my favorite shots...

The David Grisman Bluegrass experience with Head for the Hills, Ogden Theater, Denver

David Grisman came to Colorado to play with his traditional bluegrass group, The David Grisman Bluegrass Experience, and invited local string band, Head for the Hills, for an incredible night of music.

This year at Mile High, the weather was much milder than years past, and the lineup was much more ecletic. My favorite sets this weekend were in no particular order were Motet, Cypress Hill, Phoenix, and the Samples on Saturday, and for me Sunday was the day, Jimmy Cliff, Trevor Hall (check him out if you haven't yet) My Morning Jacket, Weezer, Railroad Earth, Bassnectar, and Dave Matthews Band. Great weekend, lookin forward to next year! Here are some of my favorite shots...

Rodrigo y Gabriela Red Rocks 2010

Another beautiful evening at Red Rocks features Rodrigo y Gabriela. Touring the release of a fresh album, Rod y Gab gave a whole different feel to the historic ampitheatre. With most of the fans sitting down for the whole show, holding on to every note, and carefully studing the finger work of the two guitar virtuosos. Their sound filled the venue like no other duo could. They even had a few special guests, Shankar on Violin, Rage Against the Machine's frontman, Zach de la Rocha, and Jazz Guitarist, Al Di Meola...

Camp Euforia 2010 July 17 day 2

Camp Euforia is set on a normally quiet farm, just outside of Iowa City, but on this weekend thats not the case! I was especially excited for the shows on Saturday, Kyle Hollingsworth is sitting in with the Euforkers on keys all night, and his bandmates from his other band were also playing a set...

Camp Euforia 2010 July 16 day 1

This year was my first time to Camp Euforia, and it will not be the last! What started in 2004 as a fan appreciation show, put on by Euforquestra as a free event, has turned into a full on festival. The weather was hot and sticky as usual for Iowa in July, but that didn't stop anyone from having a great time.

Kyle's Brew Fest

Kyle Hollingsworth, of the String Cheese Incident, like me is a fan of good hoppy beers, and this year he threw his first beer fest, of what I hope to be a anual thing. Hollingsworth teamed up with 4 local breweries to craft his own beers, as well as some national favorites. The night proved to be a great success, with a sold out crowd, tons of cool rock memorabilia, (including 2 of my photos), in a silent auction, and it all went to benefit Conscious Alliance. Way to go Kyle, looking forward to next year!

How to shoot Glass in the studio

So I had a model flake on me at the studio one day, so I decided to shoot a wine glass. I thought it could be a cool little demo for shooting glass with studio lighting or strobes.

Shots in the Garden

I stepped out to the garden the other day and took some photos, hope you like them!

Kinetix at Red Rocks June 8th 2010

After the release of their third album, "Let Me In" (Purchase CD here), Kinetix is on a Roll! With a Summer tour starting with Summer camp and Wakarusa, the band bumped a date in South Dakota to Play Colorado's Legendary Red Rocks Amphitheater as a part of the Film on the Rocks Series. The movie was the Hangover, and the crowd was sold out. Kinetix played a great selection from their catalog, and gained many new fans, people expecting to cry with laughter, first danced their tails off.

30db at the Fox Theatre Boulder Colorado, 5/19/10

What started as an unlikely duo of Jeff Austin of Younder Mountain String Band and Brendan Bayliss from Umphrey's McGee, turned into a musical supergroup. With the addition of Nick Forester (host of E-Town, and member of Hot Rize) on electric and slide guitar, Cody Dickenson (North Missisippi Allstars) on Drums, and Colorado bassist and producer Eric Thorin rounding out the sound, the people at the Fox on the 19th were in for a treat. This show marked the first stop of the short tour and and was by no means a sloppy show. The band was well rehursed and hit it hard from the get go. Jeff and Brendan's friendly banter back and forth let the fans know it was going to be a fun tour.

John Butler Trio Red Rocks 6/4/10 with Medeski Martin and Wood, and State Radio

It was a beautiful Colorado summer day, and an incredible line up for a Friday night at Red Rocks, the greatest place on earth!  The night started off with State Radio who's hard slamin' Rock and reggae rhythm got the crowd movin as the amphitheater filled. Next on the bill was Medeski Martin and Wood, who added a jazzy groove to the vibes, and really got the energy  bouncing off the rock walls. After MMW, Butler wanted to bring it back to earth, to pay respects to the indigenous people of the land he was about to overcome with his own musical expression. They sang and danced to traditional songs and brought the crowd of nearly 9000 to their feet. Then just before the native dancers left the stage, John Butler Trio erupted into "Used to get High". It was truly a magical moment to see the crowd really movin with the lights raging, the dancers in the background, and the band killin it!

Kinetix CD Release party, 5/14/10 Bluebird Theater

Kinetix threw down a solid set of music to release their third full length album, "Let Me In" which is currently being featured on iTunes in the Rock on the Rise section, be sure to check it out. It was a sold out crowd and the fans in Denver were raging! If the energetic antics on stage didn't please your eyes, the light show was sure to blow your mind! Adam from Berner Lighting really helped take the visual aspects to a Peak.

YAMN at the Bluebird 4/30/10

Yamn makes another leap in the right direction tonight to a sold out or nearly sold out crowd at the Bluebird Theater in Denver. Over the past few times that I have seen Yamn they have improved significantly, each show, and this time was no different. Just when you think the jams couldn't be tighter, they take it to the next level.

Euforquestra Tour Day 3

Today brought us over some more mountains into Aspen. Tucked away in down town Aspen, the Belly Up has a view of the ski hill in front and its walls are covered with incredible photographs taken within the walls. Its a smaller venue with a more than adequite light show. The crowd in aspen is slow to arrive, but it takes no time for the dance floor to fill up. Euforquestra played a monster 2-1/2 hour set, and funked it up in the Mountains!

Euforquestra Tour Day 2

Day two takes us from Ridgway, through Telluride, and into Durango. One of the most scenic drives in Colorado. The threat of snow was still hanging over our heads as we made our way through the San Juans, to the Abbey Therare. Oh what a little Jem the Abbey is. It's a small room, with tons of attention to detail, plush leather sofas and club chairs in the VIP balcony, and walls covered with acoustic panels, I could tell that the sound quality was going to be hard to beat, and with the addition of the extra subs, the sound was ultra thick and tasty.
DEW_RANG_GOUGH!!!! What a party town!

Euforquestra Tour Day 1

April 22, 2010.
The day starts early with some extra delicious breakfast burritos as we hit the road and start our 7 hour journey to Ridgway Colorado. We were heading to the Sherbino Theater, a place that reminded me of the good old Feral Book Cafe in Glenwood Springs. In the heart of old town, the Sherbino is a quaint little community theater, decked out with a nice stage and chandealiers hanging from the celing, and a great mountain town vibe. The people in Ridgway are great, and I knew instantly that it was going to be a fun night.
